On Tuesday, 25th October 2022, the world witnessed the selection of Rishi Sunak as the third prime minister of Britain this year and the first person of color to hold the position. He has vowed to correct the “mistakes” of Liz Truss’ disastrous 49-day leadership. Following the demise of Boris Johnson in July, Sunak gave a speech to the country outside 10 Downing Street following his nomination by King Charles III. Sunak stated, “I have been chosen as your prime minister and the head of my party in part to address the issues that Britain is currently facing.” Sunak defeated Penny Mordaunt, a rival candidate unable to receive enough votes from Conservative MPs, to become the next leader of the ruling Conservatives on Monday. At the age of 42, Sunak is the youngest leader and prime minister in more than 200 years and the first British Indian.
