On Wednesday, a Virginia judge ruled in favor of Johnny Depp in his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard. The Aquaman actress must pay Depp $15 million in damages and cover his legal fees.
The judge ruled that Heard had failed to prove her domestic violence allegations against Depp, which she made in a 2016 Washington Post op-ed. Heard had accused Depp of hitting her, throwing things at her, and pulling her hair during their marriage.
Depp denied the allegations and accused Heard of fabricating them to gain an advantage in their divorce and custody battle. He sued Heard for defamation, seeking $50 million in damages.
The judge found that Heard’s allegations were “not proven by clear and convincing evidence” and had “published the op-ed with actual malice,” meaning that she knew her allegations were false or made them recklessly without regard for the truth.
